Una ardua prueba “off road” en Texas con la nueva Jeep Compass

El nuevo modelo de segunda generación de la Jeep Compass es un vehículo genuinamente global que será producido en cuatro regiones del mundo. MotorShowPR fue a probarla a Texas durante un evento de prueba de manejo para la prensa internacional. Aquí la vemos pasando uno de los obstáculos en la ruta off road. San Antonio, Texas – Aún no ha salido al mercado, pero el nuevo modelo de segunda generación de la Jeep Compass ha probado ser sumamente internacional. Su debut mundial fue en Brasil, su primera presentación en Estados Unidos fue en Los Ángeles y su producción será en México, Brasil, India y China. A esta lista de lugares hay que añadirle San Antonio, Texas, donde fue su primera prueba de manejo para la prensa internacional.

Según adelanté en mis programas de radio (sábados 4:00 p.m. en WKAQ y lunes en la mañana en Estereotempo, Z-93, El Circo de la Mega y El Depelote), fui parte de ese evento y tuve una buena experiencia con este nuevo modelo tanto en carretera como en una corta, pero muy retante ruta off road.

La Compass acaba de pasar por un rediseño que la dejó como un modelo único. Es decir, ya no tiene a su compañero de plataforma, el Jeep Patriot. Con este importante dúo Jeep incursionó en el segmento de los crossovers compactos en 2007. Con estos modelos, construidos sobre plataformas de tracción delantera, Jeep arriesgó su imagen de productora de rudos vehículos 4×4. No obstante, se tomó el riesgo porque identificó antes de tiempo que el segmento de las crossovers compactas iría en crecimiento y así ocurrió. Hoy en día es uno de los segmentos de mayor venta en el mundo entero.

La habilidades de la suspensión y el sistema 4×4 de la Jeep Compass se hacen evidentes en esta porción de la ruta off road. Una goma se va completamente al aire, pero las otras tres mantienen la tracción y sacan la guagua del atolladero.

 

Como resultado, sí, Jeep enojó a algunos de sus fans más fieles por lanzar crossovers de tracción delantera, pero logró atraer a centenares de miles de nuevos clientes cada año.

Fueron varias las zonas de la ruta off road en la que una de las gomas se despegaba del camino.

 

Ya han pasado 10 años y en el trayecto ocurrió algo muy peculiar. Al principio, ambos modelos llevaban el clásico diseño delantero de Jeep con focos circulares y la parrilla de siete aberturas verticales. Durante todo ese tiempo el Patriot mantuvo su apariencia intacta, mientras que la Compass recibió una remodelación muy marcada que le dio un aspecto parecido al de la Grand Cherokee.

¿Cuál es cuál? La nueva Compass fue diseñada para que lleve los rasgos familiares de la Grand Cherokee. Como resultado es prácticamente una mini Grand Cherokee. Si no lo han descifrado aún, la nueva Compass es la de la izquierda.

 

Ese, precisamente ha sido el punto de partida para los diseñadores que crearon este nuevo modelo de segunda generación. El resultado ha sido muy favorecedor. Mientras que la última Compass lucía más bien como una guagüita a la que forzosamente se le dio la apariencia de una Grand Cherokee, la nueva quedó tan bien diseñada, que prácticamente es una Grand Cherokee pequeña. Esta vez ha quedado muy bien diseñada desde el inicio.

Un detalle muy agradable que acentúa ese look sofisticado está en la capota. En los modelos Latitude, Trailhawk y Limited (el primero de la línea es el Sport) la capota y el marco de parabrisas pueden ir pintados de negro, lo que contrasta muy agradablemente con el resto de la carrocería. Y en el tema de colores, hay dos nuevos que lucen muy bien: azul brillante y naranja.

Los modelos 4×4 tienen una transmisión automática de nueve velocidades. Los de tracción delantera también son automáticos, pero de seis velocidades. 

 

Los cuatro modelos de la Compass vienen equipados con el mismo motor. Es el mismo Tigershark de cuatro cilindros de 2.4 litros que tienen otros vehículos del portafolio de marcas de Fiat Chrysler. En la Compass tiene 180 caballos de fuerza y ofrece un rendimiento máximo de 32 millas por gallon.

Un elemento de diseño muy acertado en este nuevo modelo es la pintura negra en la capota y el marco del parabrisas.

 

Aunque hay un solo motor, la selección de transmisiones es de dos, ambas automáticas. En los modelos de tracción delantera tendrá seis velocidades, mientras que las 4×4 será de nueve.

Otro momento en el que la Compass se mantuvo en marcha con solamente tres ruedas.

 

En el evento, manejé la Compass por expresos y calles urbanas del área de San Antonio y por carreteras rurales que cruzan pueblitos que son cápsulas de tiempo, remanentes del Viejo Oeste. El rodaje es suave y silencioso, cómodo como el de un carro.

En el pueblito de Blanco, me topé con esta belleza: un hot rod Ford de la década de los treinta.

 

Donde impresionó en grande fue en la ruta off road. Es precisamente fuera del pavimento donde la Compass puede convencer a cualquiera que es toda una Jeep. En un rancho a las afueras de San Antonio se prepare una ruta off road con hoyos muy grandes, áreas con fango muy espeso y pendientes muy empinadas y la Compass sobresalió en todas las pruebas. Incluso, hubo partes en las que la ruta era tan desnivelada que alguna de las ruedas se levantaba al aire. Entonces, el sistema 4×4 aumentaba la tracción en las otras tres gomas y mantenía la marcha hasta alcanzar terreno menos hostil.

En toda la línea Compass el motor es un cuatro cilindros de 2.4 litros y 180 caballos de fuerza.
