DESDE PRINCIPIOS de la década de los sesenta, Ford se dio a la tarea de planificar con miras de producir un auto para personas jóvenes. En esos momentos la segunda de las entonces Tres Grandes de Detroit contaba con el Galaxie, el Fairlane, y el Falcon pero ninguno de ellos era atractivo para ese tipo de consumidor que Ford quería atraer. El Thunderbird sí le gustaba a los jóvenes pero era muy costoso. Por consiguiente, el nuevo carro también debía tener un precio accesible.
Ya en una etapa adelantada de desarrollo del proyecto, se determinó un volumen de ventas de 100,000 unidades anuales. También, entre muchos otros nombres, consideraron llamarlo “Turino”, pero finalmente bautizaron al nuevo carro como el Mustang.
El Mustang hizo su gran debut en la Feria Mundial de Nueva York de 1964 (en la foto de arriba aparece en su área de exhibición en la feria con el entonces presidente de Ford, Henry Ford II). Debido a que fue introducido a mediados de año, oficialmente se le conoce como el Mustang de 1964½. De inmediato, el carro gustó mucho, por lo que pareció ser un éxito seguro. Pero nadie imaginó lo que sucedería en los lotes de venta.
El triunfo del Mustang fue instantáneo. La gente quedó deslumbrada por su diseño, eternamente caracterizado por un bonete largo y un baúl corto. Esto fue inmediatamente copiado por todas las automotrices y es un estándar de diseño hasta el día de hoy. El carro no sólo le gustó a los jóvenes, sino también a las amas de casa, los ejecutivos con gran poder adquisitivo y hasta a personas de edad avanzada. Su precio de $2,368 lo hacía aún más irresistible.
Entre el público se desató un verdadero frenesí. Había tanta euforia por el Mustang como entre las adolescentes por los Beatles. La proporción de la demanda se disparó a 15 clientes por cada Mustang disponible. Algunos lotes de venta se aprovecharon y hasta subastaban las pocas unidades disponibles.
Tan descomunal fue la acogida de aquel primer Mustang, que en tan sólo cuatro meses, se vendió la cantidad proyectada para el año completo. Los Mustangs salían de los dealers casi a razón de 900 diarios. Al finalizar el año modelo, la cifra culminó en 681,000 unidades vendidas. Hasta el día de hoy, ningún automóvil nuevo ha repetido tal hazaña y es muy probable que nunca se repita. El Mustang número 1,000,000 salió de las líneas de ensamblaje tan solo un año después. Por estos logros, el primer Mustang ostenta el título del carro nuevo más exitoso de todos los tiempos.
El fenómeno Mustang tomó a los rivales de Ford totalmente desprevenidos. Ninguno pudo contestar inmediatamente. No fue hasta el 1967 que Chevrolet respondió con el eterno rival del Mustang: el Camaro. Luego fue Pontiac con el Firebird.
Poco a poco comenzaron a salir más competidores. American Motors introdujo el Javelin y luego, su versión de dos asientos, el AMX. Chrysler lanzó el Plymouth Barracuda y el Dodge Challenger.
A este gran conjunto de imitadores los llamaron “pony cars” debido a que en inglés “Mustang” significa “caballo salvaje”. Eventualmente, el Mustang también cayó bajo esta clasificación.
Tal fue su éxito que el Mustang creó por sí sólo un mercado completo.

For now you just right click on the timer and choose “Set Time” to change the countdown time to anything you want. In a future release I will look at adding a mechanism to allow you to change the time a little quicker.

I can't say I've had out of body experiences unless zoning out during trauma is the same thing. I went through the hassle of getting a 2 year residence visa in the UK, but it does not sound like such a hassle after reading what you had to do! The UK is nearly not as interesting as setting up base in a country like Romania, but at least it is a base for me to go out and see more of Europe for a while. I will be heading to Romania in December/January. If you are still there you should show me some of the sights!
I think three is a perfect number of chooks. When I was a child my mother kept chooks and used to sell eggs to the (then) Egg Board. We had around 70 chooks, including a couple of aggressive and territorial roosters. They were free range in the days when that’s what chooks were, and one of my tasks was to ensure they were all back on in the coop in the evenings. As a consequence of all this, I hate roosters, and think the smaller number of chooks, the better. Three seems about perfect. Enjoy. Yours seem very civilized.

I’m in the process of reading Simplicity Parenting right now (just blogged about it). We really are pretty good about the “too much stuff” – a cross country move two years ago really helped and we all fit tidily into a 1400 sq ft house (6 people). What I’m most impressed with in Simplicity parenting isn’t the encouragement to declutter physical stuff, but the encouragement to sheild children from our information obsessed culture too. We don’t watch tv but f I take a computer break I’m suddenly aware, when I get back, of how much of my headspace gets “cluttered” with everything cthat can be googled.

have a top of the line bobopedic with the pillow top. this cost me about 2 grand.maybe 4/5 yrs ago. i got the queen size, and took advantage of the option to get the half firm / half soft – firm for me – soft for my gf at the time. we broke up, so the soft side does not get used. the pillow top on my side has completly detoriated,stretched and seporated. the firm side is now significantly softer than the soft. i can no longer sleep on my side due to back pain. filing a warranty claim.
