Nochebuena entre marcianos y dunas blancas

El color del Charger combinó perfectamente bien con el panorama.
Para la Nochebuena del 2014, durante un road trip  que comencé en Austin Texas con el colega periodista José Carmona, visité el parque nacional White Sands, en Alamogordo, Nuevo México. Durante la mañana estuvimos entre marcianos en Roswell, y durante la tarde, entre dunas blancas, en White Sands. El color del Dodge Charger que manejamos combinó perfectamente con el panorama. Hoy celebramos la Nochebuena y eso me recuerda que para estos mismos días en en el 2014 me encontraba en un larguísimo road trip de 1,750 millas por los estados de Texas, Nuevo México y Oklahoma. La razón principal del viaje fue visitar Roswell, el mítico pueblito de Nuevo México donde en el 1947 ocurrió el famoso suceso en el que se alega se estrelló un platillo volador tripulado por alienígenas. El relato de esa visita a Roswell la pueden leer aquí.

Otro lugar que deseaba ir a ver era el parque nacional White Sands, en Alamogordo, también en Nuevo México. Llegamos a Roswell la noche del 23 de diciembre. Durante la mañana del 24 visitamos su museo de ovnis y luego salimos hacia Alamogordo. O sea, que el día de Nochebuena lo pasamos entre marcianos por la mañana y por la tarde, entre dunas blancas como el talco.

En el artículo original les conté que el auto que nos llevó en este road trip fue un Dodge Charger SXT, el cual nos vino muy bien ya que los límites de velocidad en Texas y Nuevo México son muy altos. ¿Y qué mejor que andar en un genuino muscle car americano para volar por carreteras infinitas a más de 80 mph? Lo mejor de todo es que lo estábamos haciendo de manera legal.

Después de la visita al museo, salimos de Roswell temprano en la tarde. Alamogordo y el parque White Sands quedan a poco más de 130 millas, por lo que nos tomaría alrededor de dos horas llegar. La ruta nos llevaría por expresos y carreteras de montaña y tendríamos que subir hasta el bosque nacional Ruidoso, que queda a más de 7,000 pies de altura. De los 3,648 pies en los que queda Roswell, subiríamos a esos 7,000 de Ruidoso, para luego bajar a los 4,235 en los que ubican Alamogordo y White Sands. Íbamos con el tiempo justo porque por ser invierno, estaba oscureciendo temprano y lo lindo de White Sands es verlo con la mayor intensidad de luz solar posible.

La blancura de la arena de White Sands se debe a un mineral: yeso, que en inglés, es gypsum. Quiere decir que ese material al que toda la vida le hemos estado diciendo “gypsum board“, es realmente eso mismo: yeso; lo que te ponen en el brazo o una pierna cuando sufres una fractura. “Gypsum” no es una marca, es sencillamente el mineral del que están hechas esas paredes huecas.

A nuestro arribo a Alamogordo y poco después, a White Sands, todavía hacía mucho sol, pero ya estaba bajando. White Sands es en sí un gran valle, por lo que las montañas que lo rodean aceleran bastante la puesta del sol y las sombras de las dunas se encargaban de oscurecer  porciones del parque.

Según aprendí allí, White Sands es el depósito de yeso más grande del mundo. Cubre un área de 363 millas cuadradas, que es más o menos el tamaño de todos los municipios que componen la zona metropolitana de San Juan. Ahora bien, eso es el parque solamente, porque el desierto White Sands completo es de 3,200 millas cuadradas, lo que ocuparía casi toda la isla de Puerto Rico.

White Sands también es muy importante desde el punto de vista histórico porque fue en ese desierto donde en 1941 y como parte de los experimentos Trinity, Estados Unidos detonó la primera bomba atómica del mundo. De hecho, el área continúa siendo un área de pruebas militares y se llama White Sands Missile Range.

No se nota mucho, pero en el centro de la duna hay nombres escritos . En algunas dunas había nombres y frases con letras gigantes.

Estuvimos poco más de una hora dentro del parque. Oscureció y salimos hacia el centro de Alamagordo. Había anochecido y ya literalmente era la noche de Nochebuena. Cenamos entre extraños en un restaurante de cadena y después buscamos una hospedería. Al próximo día, el 25, día de Navidad, el road trip nos llevaría de la blancura total de White Sands a otro lugar mucho, pero mucho más colorido.

Man, that work by Bill Pentz makes me understand that my current, basic dust collection is doing virtually no good when it comes to fine dust.I have been through two dust respirators over the years, with dust masks used at other times and I have found the respirators cause moisture to build up inside the mask. Once I even found mold growing inside my mask. So, I have not used them. But, I'll have to start using a respirator again and take better care of it.Thanks for the comments Jason and David.

  34. Yes, I wish the Admins would number the pics in pic-heavy posts like these. The rock pics, I didn’t care for that much because he had too much makeup. Not the eye makeup, which I like, but makeup covering the skin of his face. Or perhaps it’s airbrushing…The ones that really draw my eyes out of this collection are the three where he’s just standing against a white wall.
