Tesoros en el Junker: Cementerio MOPAR en el centro de la Isla

Este lugar en Naranjito pondría a cualquier entusiasta de Mopar a llorar como Magdalena… o a soñar proyectos. Fotos: Andrés O’Neill, Jr.

 

Este lugar en medio de las montañas guarda cerca de 10 ejemplares de la época de gloria de Mopar, la línea de muscle cars de las marcas Dodge y Plymouth.

 

Cada vez que hago una prueba de manejo, doy largos paseos por las costas y montañas de la Isla con dos propósitos: probar y fotografiar el auto y casi más importante, meterme por caminos y recovecos rurales en busca de carros abandonados que sean interesantes. Y sí, siempre encuentro de todo: desde vehículos que ni me molesto en fotografiar porque ya tengo decenas de fotos del mismo modelo, hasta genuinas joyas muy raras por las que uno tiene que preguntarse por qué están en esas condiciones.

Ahora bien, es muy rara la ocasión en la que encuentro muchos vehículos muy interesantes agrupados en un mismo lugar y muchísimo más raro aún, que sean todos de la misma marca. Manejando hace un tiempo por Naranjito, me topé con un sitio así: un cementerio de Mopars.

Tiene bastante moho, pero este Duster aún se ve rescatable. ¿Qué creen?

Para los que no sepan, Mopar siempre ha sido, desde la década de los 1930, la división de piezas y accesorios para todas las marcas de Chrysler (que para ese entonces tenía a Dodge, Plymouth, De Soto y Chrysler). Ya para la década de los sesenta, en plena época de gloria de los muscle cars, Mopar se convirtió en la cultura popular en el nombre colectivo para todo vehículo que proviniera de Chrysler. O sea, si era un Dodge, era un Mopar; si era un Plymouth, también se le decía “Mopar” y así sucesivamente.

 

El mismo Duster de frente. El Hemi (o el Slant 6) desapareció. Detrás, un Swinger.

 

Este lado de la carrocería luce mejor.

 

La costumbre continúa hasta el día de hoy y aún cuando hay círculos en los que utilizan el término para describir modelos actuales de Chrysler (e incluso de su marca Jeep), para los más tradicionalistas, “Mopar” se usa mayormente para los Dodge y Plymouths de la primera época de los muscle cars. Y digo “la primera” porque la segunda la estamos viviendo ahora mismo con increíbles muscle cars modernos de Ford, Chevrolet, Dodge y Chrysler que son mucho más potentes que los originales de la década de los sesenta.

Así, que me sorprendió muchísimo encontrarme con este cementerio Mopar en Naranjito. Hay cerca de 10 ejemplares, mayormente Dusters y Swingers. Si alguno es un Demon, pues realmente no sé. No conozco las diferencias visuales entre un Demon y un Duster y menos aún en estas condiciones. Así que aquí les dejo las fotos y ustedes se encargan de identificarlos. Espero les gusten aunque los pongan a llorar. Bueno, mejor pónganse a soñar conque los rescatan y los convierten en proyectos de restauración.

El Swinger tampoco tiene motor.

 

Siempre me ha encantado el diseño lateral del Swinger, especialmente la inclinación de ese grueso poste trasero. Esa puerta de cinc no es equipo original.

 

Este ya no lo tiene, pero otro detalle que también me gustó siempre del Swinger era el cristal trasero curvo.

 

Examiné el Swinger a vuelta redonda y la caja se ve bastante sólida. La RAV4 azulita que se ve al fondo es el vehículo que estuve probando ese fin de semana.

 

Un Duster bastante más completo.

 

 

Otro Swinger. Se ve destruido, pero tiene más componentes que el color marrón. También tiene el motor. Con los guardalodos delanteros del otro, casi se puede completar el carro.

 

Tras tantos años a la intemperie, ha cogido un aspecto fantasmagórico.

 

Observen la variedad de colores. Imaginen lo bellos que se habrán visto cuando eran nuevos.

 

Afortunadamente no todos los carros son esqueletos relegados a ser donantes de piezas. El dueño tiene este precioso Plymouth Scamp en perfectas condiciones.
