Subastado un Beetle… ¡en USD $121,000!

Para los que creían haberlo visto todo en el mundo del automóvil, les tengo un acontecimiento sin precedentes. Un humilde Volkswagen Beetle del 1960 fue subastado en $121,000. Sí, my friends, ciento veintiun mil dólares… ¡por un Volky!

Este resultado fue la gran sorpresa en    el,evento más reciente de la casa de subastas Gooding & Company celebrada recientemente en el concours d’elegance de Amelia Island, en Florida. Claro, se vendieron autos que lograron cantidades muchísimo más altas, algunas de múltiples millones, pero nadie esperaba que un simple bolillo alcanzara los seis dígitos. De hecho, en los avisos previos a la subasta se especulaba que el Volky fuera adquirido entre los $35 mil y los $55 mil, que de todas maneras, son precios altísimos para un Volky.

Hay dos razones por la que este lindísimo Vocho (como les dicen a los Volkys en México) generara tantísimo interés y por consiguiente halara tanto dinero. Una de ellas es que quien lo estaba vendiendo era el comediante Jerry Seinfeld, que al igual que Jay Leno (aunque a una escala considerablemente menor) es un gran coleccionista de autos. Su especialidad son los Porsche y de hecho, subastó allí mismo alrededor de 12 o 14 de ellos y dos Volkswagens (éste y una Microbus que se fue en $99,000). Como resultado, Seinfeld salió de Amelia Island con cerca de $20 millones más en su cuenta de banco.

Pero la razón principal por la que este Volky logró tanto dinero es su condición. Resulta que está todo original. Nunca ha sido chocado, pintado o retapizado. Está con la misma pintura, alfombras, asientos y hasta calcomanías con las que salió de la fábrica de Wolfsburg, Alemania hace 56 años. Encima de eso, el caculito no ha llegado a las 15,500 millas. Otro elemento de gran valor: tiene toda la documentación de su mantenimiento desde que era nuevo.

Fue una maestra del estado de South Dakota quien lo compró nuevo de paquete y tras que  casi no lo usaba, siempre lo mantuvo dentro de un garage. En treinta años sólo lo manejó un poco más de 14,000 millas.

Según la casa de subastas, la maestra le vendió el caculito gris claro a un sobrino suyo en el 1990. Y contrario a lo que siempre sucede cuando alguien le regala o vende a un familiar joven, un carrito viejo, de poco millaje y en estado original, su sobrino no le alteró el motor, no lo chocó contra un poste, ni lo “adornó” con un montón de charrerías. Lo que hizo en vez, fue preservarlo aún más y durante los 18 años que lo tuvo, sólo lo manejó 870 millas adicionales; más o menos 48 millas cada año.

Ya en el 2008 se lo vendió a una persona del estado de Iowa que también lo manejó muy poco. Fue ese tercer dueño quien se lo vendió a Seinfeld ese mismo año. Y como es el caso de autos pertenecientes a grandes celebridades, los ocho años que estuvo en manos de Seinfeld dispararon su valor.

Así que hay alguien por ahí en el mundo de los coleccionistas de autos que gastó 121 mil billetes por un Volky de 56 años que está casi virginal. Dudo que quiera manejarlo.
