Nueva York – El New York International Auto Show, que concluye mañana domingo, comenzó la semana pasada con dos días dedicados a la prensa con decenas de presentaciones. Entre las primeras, estuvo un triple lanzamiento por parte de Toyota que estuvo protagonizado por un modelo existente que cambió de nombre e incluso, de marca, otro modelo existente que recibe retoques en su diseño y un modelo totalmente nuevo. Estos son el Toyota 86, la Highlander de 2017 y un nuevo Prius enchufable.

El nuevo integrante para la línea Prius se llama Prius Prime. Es un híbrido enchufable o tipo “plug in” que con sólo enchufarlo a la pared ofrece una carga secundaria que permite sea manejado únicamente con electricidad. El alcance total de esta carga secundaria es de 22 millas, por lo que a lo largo de esa distancia, no consume ni una sola gota de gasolina.

Para que tengan una idea de ese alcance, una persona que viva en Guaynabo o en las zonas este de Bayamón y trabaje en Hato Rey o Río Piedras, podría ir toda la semana ida y vuelta al trabajo sin usar gasolina. Sólo tendría que enchufar el Prius Prime a un tomacorrientes cada noche.

Esta nueva variante del Prius es tan eficiente que el tanque de gasolina logra un alcance máximo de 600 millas, lo que es suficiente para darle casi dos vueltas completas a todo Puerto Rico. Pero eso es un extremo, dándole un uso promedio, alguien que no viva muy lejos de su trabajo y enchufe su Prius Prime todos los días, podría no tener que volver a echar gasolina. Sólo la necesitaría para viajes largos… como darle dos vueltas a la Isla.

Otro modelo presentado fue la Highlander del 2017 que además de unos retoques en su diseño adquiere una nueva transmisión automática de ocho velocidades y un nuevo motor V6 que a la vez que es más poderoso, es más eficiente. También recibe cuatro modelos para su versión híbrida.

Durante el triple lanzamiento, Toyota habló brevemente sobre la cancelación de su marca Scion y sobre la transición de uno de sus modelos sobrevivientes hacia la marca Toyota. Para ello presentó el Toyota 86, que es el nuevo nombre para el modelo que se conocía como el Scion FR-S.

Tras la cancelación de la marca Scion, rápidamente surgió interés entre los entusiastas de los autos por un posible cambio de nombre para este cupé deportivo ya que en todas partes del mundo es mercadeado como un Toyota y de acuerdo a la región, con uno de dos nombres: GT86 o simplemente 86. Lo más lógico entonces, era que si pasaba de Scion a Toyota, que se le diera uno de esos dos nombres.

Es un cambio muy pequeño, pero no deja de ser notable: el emblema "86" baja de posición y en el proceso, pierde el par de pistones que rodeaba el círculo con el "86".

No obstante, Toyota planificó desde el principio retener el nombre “FR-S” cuando el cupé se transformara de un Scion a un Toyota. Pero, tal y como reportamos hace dos semanas (pueden leer el artículo aquí), la automotriz expresó que el nombre sería “86”. Eso lo confirmó durante el triple lanzamiento en Nueva York cuando presentó el modelo como el Toyota 86. ¿La razón para el reversazo? Toyota le hizo caso a los seguidores del auto, quienes siempre prefirieron el nombre original.

El rebautismo coincide con leves retoques de diseño. Tanto al frente como atrás recibe nuevos focos, bumpers distintos y una insignia de estilo más simple. Son cambios que aunque menores, son bastante notables pero aun así mantienen intacta la esencia del auto.

Por su parte, el motor recibió un minúsculo aumento en potencia de cinco caballitos de fuerza para un nuevo total de 205.
