Puede que muchos de ustedes ya se hayan olvidado de la marca alemana de ultralujo llamada Maybach. Vivió brevemente desde el 2002 al 2013 y fue el intento de la entonces DaimlerChrysler de tener una marca mucho más lujosa que Mercedes-Benz. Estamos hablando de una marca de ultralujo con la misma o mayor opulencia que Rolls-Royce.
Maybach no era nueva en sí. Era una marca alemana de gran lujo que databa del 1909 y en un momento dado fue comprada por Mercedes-Benz. Así que DaimlerChrysler decidió revivirla para ponerla a competir contra Rolls-Royce y Bentley.
Lo que más que impresionó de los Maybach que salieron en el 2002 fue sus interiores. Su cabina, especialmente el área de los asientos traseros no tenían comparación con nada de su época. Además de su pequeño refrigerador con copas de plata incluidas, las maderas exóticas y las finísimas pieles, fueron sus butacas traseras reclinables casi hasta una posición horizontal lo que revolucionaron el exclusivo segmento de los autos de ultralujo. En cuanto a interiores, Maybach creó un antes y un después.
En lo que lo que Maybach falló grandemente fue en el diseño exterior. Tenía una apariencia tan sobria y tan aburrida, que no impresionaba. DaimlerChrysler falló en proyectar en el exterior del carro la opulencia de los interiores. En términos de apariencia, era casi un Mercedes-Benz Clase S más grande y que costaba el triple.
Cuando Maybach determinó expandir su línea con un cupé no quiso cometer el mismo error. Así que le prestó mucha atención al diseño exterior. De hecho, tanta atención le dio a ese detalle, que el resultado fue un carro muy llamativo.
El auto en cuestión es el Exelero, un prototipo que Maybach desarrolló en conjunto a una compañía alemana de neumáticos llamada Fulda. Además de un ejercicio en diseño, sirvió de base para un experimento de gomas resistentes a altas velocidades. La velocidad máxima que tanto Maybach como Fulda se establecieron como límite fue de 350 kilómetros por hora, o 219 mph.
El Exelero resultó ser tan potente, sobrepasó esa cifra. Llegó a las 220 mph (351.45 kph). Las gomas, montadas en unos aros de 23 pulgadas, además de soportar esas altísimas velocidades, también aguantaron el peso de más de 5,000 libras del Exelero.
La potencia vino del mismo motor que movía a los Maybachs regulares. Era un V12 de Mercedes-Benz de 5.5 litros y 543 caballos de fuerza. No obstante, se le hicieron ajustes para aumentar su capacidad a 5.9 litros y darle más potencia al turbo. Eso aumentó el caballaje a 700 y el torque a unas demoledoras 1,000 libras de presión.
La plataforma utilizada para el Exelero es la misma del Maybach 57, que con 5.7 metros o 19 pies de largo, es el más “corto” de los Maybach. Por tanto, el Exelero fue un cupé inmeso, largísimo para un carro de dos puertas.
¿El diseño? Pues por fin Maybach logró algo muy llamativo. Le dio una apariencia retro que emuló a los grandes autos de lujo de finales de la década de los veinte y principios de los treinta y cuyas carrocerías eran fabricadas a mano por los llamados “coachbuilders”. Estos eran garajes muy exclusivos o compañías que se dedicaban a hacer carrocerías siguiendo las especificaciones (o más bien antojos) de sus clientes. A la vez, Maybach se inspiró en un prototipo suyo que existió entre 1938 y 1939, pero que trágicamente desapareció durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Afortunadamente, los planos del auto y algunas fotos sobrevivieron y fueron tomados como base para diseñar el Exelero.
El resultado fue un cupé con un diseño regio, impactante. De perfil,trae a la mente a uno de los autos más bellos jamás producidos, el apodado Goutte d’Eau (gota de agua) de la desaparecida, pero muy exclusiva automotriz francesa Talbot Lago.
No obstante, de frente, el diseño resultó algo caricaturesco. Una inmensa parrilla casi triangular se asemejaba a unos enormes dientes frontales, algo así como los de Bugs Bunny.
¿Qué pasó al fin y al cabo con el Exelero? Nunca lo produjeron. Se quedó solamente como un prototipo. Pero fue tanto el nivel de atención que logró, que hubo ofertas de compra por ese único ejemplar. Finalmente, el rapero Birdman lo compró por $8 millones, una cantidad que con el tiempo pudiera aumentar ya que se trata de un auto muy potente, exótico y tan y tan exclusivo, que solamente existe una sola unidad.
La marca Maybach resultó ser un fracaso muy costoso para Daimler y finalmente fue cancelada en el 2012. No obstante, el nombre sobrevivió y es ahora una designación para los modelos más lujosos del Mercedes-Benz Clase S.

Nice post, Ann! I see a lot of people trying hard to be authentic, but I feel the path to authenticity is to let go and just be ‘more of you’. I think a lot has to do with our inability (as a generation?) to self-reflect, but also with the trend in society to copy successful people in the hope that we too will be more like them. To me, being authentic is feeling comfortable with who you are in every situation you face, be that at work, at home or even wearing a fur coat…

Somehow justice is served by establishing a class system that puts the white male at the bottom. This is the legacy of the civil rights movement of 40 years ago. How is it that I am twice as fast as my own ISP? I have a 5Mbps line but I am rated at 9.41Mbps by Youtube. My ISP is rated at 5.17Mbps. I'm confused as for how this is supposed to work out since I test my own line speed to work out to be a little under the 5Mbps speed.

My family has been taking the dog out on walks and I’ve really been thinking about it. I’m sure I’ll start going with them too.I get a great workout at my daughter’s soccer practices. I get out on the field and scrimmage with them. It’s fun and a great workout I use to exercise all the time, but now I want to excerise and do something fun or entertaining (or productive) while I do it. Now that it’s summer, it’s much easier to get some exercise. The rain has been holding me back a bit, but hopefully we start to stay dry.

The rating should definitely be linked to the account that rated it. It doesn't make sense to be able to rate a video multiple times. This does away with the community aspect of ratings. I think if people want to rate, they should get an account and sign in. That way when I see a rating on a video, I know it's a consistent rating of the entire YouTube community.

After more surfing, I think a “lottery protected” pick implies that we retain that pick if (or rather when) we are back in the lottery and then traded pick carries forward as a 1st rounder the next year. Also, although the braintrust at Golden State hasn’t grabbed a 2nd round sleeper since Monta. Maybe there is a Ginolbi, Boozer, Okur or more recently, Blair out there this year. I'm so glad you had a Merry Christmas! I got the best gift of all this year – a beautiful baby boy named Luke. He arrived 3 weeks early (Dec. 6, on his Daddy's birthday), but is the best present I got this year. He managed to bring together my family for the holiday (no easy feat)! I read an article yesterday (wish I could find the link) written by a nurse describing the top 5 regrets from people on their deathbed. #1 was not living their life the way they wanted it to be lived. Mon fils prends un comprimé de piportil tous les soirs.. avant cela, il prenait 2 comprimés, des anxyolitiques, des sommnifères, ect.. cela fait deux fois qu’il passe une visite àla préfecture, pour renouvellement de son permis, àchaque fois 2 années. En janvier, il doit refaire la demande, ne prenant plus que 1 seul comprimé de piportil à10 mg, pensez vous que son permis sera de nouveau donné définitivement,ou pour une période plus longue.
