CADA VEZ que viajo para cubrir algún evento automotriz trato de extender mi estadía con tal de conocer más del área. Para ello recurro al clásico road trip. Más fácil sería ir en una excursión en una guagua turística, pero contrario a uno de esos tours , manejar uno mismo provee un inmenso sentido de libertad. En vez de regirse por un itinerario, es uno el que decide por sí mismo a dónde ir y cuándo. Después de todo, fue precisamente ese sentido de independencia lo que estableció al automóvil, aún durante su infancia, como el medio de transporte preferido.
Bueno, pues al día siguiente de concluir mis labores en Las Vegas Speedway donde estaba probando los modelos SRT de Chrysler, partí hacia las inmensidades del gran suroeste americano. A lo largo de cinco días manejé por igual número de estados en un largo recorrido de más de 1,300 millas (2,090 kilómetro). Mi vehículo fue una Scion xB del 2008.
Ya descontinuada, pero en aquel momento recién estrenando su segunda generación, el entonces modelo emblema de Scion proyecta más seriedad que la edición original. Mientras que la primera edición fue usada por muchos jóvenes para ir de fiesta y hacer bebés, esta segunda generación es muy práctica para criar esos mismos bebés. Es un vehículo más grande, más útil y por consiguiente, más cómodo. Esto no significa que el primero no lo fuera. Era precisamente el espacio de la cabina lo que más sorprendía en la primera xB.
Por fuera, la singular silueta diminuta y súper cuadrada, hacía pensar que adentro no habría espacio. Sin embargo, Toyota logró crear, de un empaque muy compacto, una cabina con bastante amplitud. Eso se multiplica en esta segunda generación, pues al comenzar con un vehículo más grande, se le pudo dar unos interiores más amplios. Donde más se ve este aumento de espacio es en el área de carga, lo que resulta muy conveniente para un road trip.
PUNTO DE PARTIDA: EL FAMOSO LETRERO
El punto de partida oficial fue el famoso letrero que da la bienvenida a Las Vegas. De ahí salí directamente hacia la cercana represa Hoover, una inmensa maravilla de la ingeniería construida durante la desastrosa década de los treinta. Dos fueron los propósitos para su creación. Uno fue para almacenar agua del río Colorado y llevarla a los estados de la región incluyendo a California. La descomunal muralla que aguanta las poderosas corrientes del río es de 70 pisos de alto. El segundo fin de su construcción era proveerle un empleo a algunos de los millones de obreros desplazados por los estragos de la Gran Depresión.
Sobre el centro de la parte superior de la represa, por donde uno maneja, corre la línea divisoria entre Nevada y Arizona. Desde la represa manejé directo hasta el pueblo de Kingman, ya en Arizona. Del trayecto, es muy poco lo que les puedo contar pues se me hizo de noche y hay muy poco qué decir de la negrura del desierto. No obstante, fue el escenario perfecto para probar la aceleración de la xB, la cual aunque dista de ser relampagueante, es muy apropiada y sobre todo, mucho mejor que la del primer modelo. En lugar del anémico motor de cuatro cilindros, 1.5 litros y escasos 103 caballos de fuerza, este modelo de segunda generación obtiene el mismo motor del modelo deportivo de los Scion, el cupé tC. Al igual que en el primer modelo, es también de cuatro cilindros, pero de 2.4 litros y con un caballaje más apropiado de 158. Nuestra xB tenía una transmisión manual de cinco velocidades, pero también hay disponible una automática de cuatro cambios.
LA RUTA 66
Del trayecto que sí les puedo contar es del que tomé al próximo día luego de pernoctar en Kingman: la mítica Ruta 66. Bautizada por el escritor John Steinbeck como la Mother Road o la “carretera madre”, la Ruta 66 se extendía ininterrumpidamente desde Chicago hasta Santa Mónica, California. Debido a que pasaba por la calle principal de muchos de los pueblitos que estaban en la ruta, también le llamaban the Main Street of America. Sin embargo, tras la construcción del sistema de carreteras interestatales ideado por el presidente Eisenhower, la Ruta 66 se convirtió en una vía obsoleta y grandes porciones cayeron en desuso hasta ser abandonadas. En su mayor parte, fue sustituida por la Interestatal 40 que atraviesa la nación desde la costa de Carolina del Norte hasta Barstow, California.
En los ocho estados por los que transcurrió la Ruta 66 aún quedan varios remanentes transitables. Uno de éstos es en Arizona y se extiende desde Kingman hasta Williams, un pintoresco pueblito que sirve de antesala al Gran Cañón, mi próxima parada.
Viajar por la Ruta 66 es como regresar al pasado. Abundan los comercios de antaño como los clásicos diners , estaciones de gasolina y pequeñas hospederías, muchos con antiguos letreros de neón. También abundan los carros viejos. Algunos están en muy buenas condiciones, pero la mayoría están decrépitos. Pero es precisamente su estado de abandono lo que los convierte en algo así como una poesía dedicada a la época de gloria de esta noble carretera vieja que se niega a morir.
UNA MARAVILLA DE LA NATURALEZA
La Ruta 66 me llevó al pueblito de Williams y de allí subí al Gran Cañón. Bueno, hasta este punto ya había subido bastante. De la elevación de poco más de 2,000 pies de Las Vegas y los 3,325 de Kingman, en Williams ya estaba en los 6,700. En el Gran Cañón estaría en el punto más alto de todo el road trip: 7,450 pies sobre el nivel del mar. Durante las interminables cuestas que subí, el motor de la xB respondió muy bien.
Una cosa es ver el Gran Cañón en fotos y otra, en persona. Cuando me detuve en el primer punto de observación, el panorama casi me paraliza. Quedé mudo, excepto por las varias palabrotas que se me escaparon por la impresión que me causó. Estar allí hace pensar en cuan insignificantes somos realmente. Allí analicé que frente al cañón, uno es apenas una partícula de polvo, una bacteria. El Gran Cañón a su vez, aún con su inmensa majestuosidad, es tan sólo una fisura en nuestro planeta, y la Tierra apenas una molécula en el universo. Somos nada.
De todo el viaje, podría decirles que donde más llamó la atención la xB fue precisamente en el Gran Cañón. En varias ocasiones, noté personas apuntando mientras pasaba. En otras, al regresar al estacionamiento había gente observándola. En un momento dado y tal vez como muestra de que la xB no apela solamente al público joven al que está dirigida, se me acercó un señor de más de 70 años para preguntarme sobre el modelo. Le gustó mucho su apariencia y el tamaño compacto. Una de sus preguntas más específicas fue sobre el rendimiento de combustible que según Scion, es de unas 28 millas por galón en la autopista, lo que se acerca a las 24 que promediamos durante todo el road trip.
RUN, FORREST! RUN!
Mi tercer día en la carretera me llevaría hasta el estado de Utah y uno de los lugares que más quería ver de todo el viaje: Monument Valley, en la frontera de Utah y Arizona y dentro de la Nación Navajo, una gigantesca reservación india que se extiende por porciones de varios estados. Este valle es un sitio en el que se han filmado muchísimos comerciales y películas. La más famosa probablemente sea la escena en que Forrest Gump, luego de trotar a lo ancho del continente, decide no correr más. Pues la vista más famosa de Monument Valley es la de una recta casi infinita que se pierde hasta el horizonte donde se ven una bellas formaciones de piedras rojas. Poniendo mi cámara sobre la capota de la xB, me tomé varias fotos en secuencia como si estuviera corriendo como Forrest Gump.
Al igual que el Gran Cañón, Monument Valley es un lugar que deja a uno mudo por su belleza. Sí, también saca una que otra palabrota de admiración.
Cercano a Monument Valley y ya dentro de Utah, está el diminuto pueblo de Mexican Hat, llamado así por una formación rocosa que se asemeja a un hombre con un típico sombrero mexicano. Allí tuve mi primer encuentro con el fr ybread, esa delicia de la cocina de los indios navajo. Es una especie de un pan frito que se come con miel, azúcar o canela. A mí me gustó tanto, que no le eché nada y lo comí como acompañante de un guisado de carne.
Desde Mexican Hat manejaría varias horas hasta Cortéz en el estado de Colorado. Al día siguiente manejaría hasta mi próximo punto de interés: Four Corners.
ENTRETENIDO EN LAS DISTANCIAS
Mucha gente me pregunta si me aburre estar solo en un auto por tantas horas. Realmente no ya que me fascina manejar largas distancias porque es algo que obviamente, no puedo hacer en Puerto Rico.
Bueno, pues a todo aquél que disfruta manejar, la carretera es un destino de por sí y un road tripes como estar sentado en una butaca y ver todo un continente desfilando frente a uno. Por supuesto, hay momentos en los que uno necesita distraerse con algo además que el paisaje. En el caso de la xB, hallé ese entretenimiento en su equipo de audio que además de radio y CD tiene conexión para iPod. Conectado así, el iPod puede ser controlado desde la pantalla interactiva que combina el radio con el sistema de navegación.
CUATRO LUGARES A LA MISMA VEZ
Si estar en dos lugares a la misma vez suena como algo imposible, más lo es estar en cuatro. Pues permítanme decirles que técnicamente sí es posible. En el monumento Four Corners uno puede estar simultáneamente en los estados de Colorado, Arizona, Utah y Nuevo México. Esto es así porque es el único lugar en toda la nación en el que se unen las fronteras de cuatro estados. El monumento es bien simple. Consta de una pequeña plaza con las banderas de los cuatro estados y en su centro, una diminuta placa circular que marca el punto exacto en que se unen las cuatro fronteras. Allí la gente se toma fotos con sus pies y manos en cada estado. Hice lo mismo y estuve en los cuatro a la misma vez en distintas posiciones. Hasta puse un dedo en cada estado. Como no se puede estacionar sobre el monumento, la Scion xB tuvo que conformarse con estar simultáneamente en tan sólo dos estados. En Four Corners tuve mi segundo encuentro con el delicioso frybread.
EL TRAMO MÁS LARGO
Mi parada en Four Corners fue durante mi último día en la carretera, el más largo de todos. Debido a que a la mañana siguiente tomaría mi avión de regreso a casa, tenía que llegar esa misma noche a Las Vegas. Por tanto, me esperaba un extenuante día de viaje y no de paseo en el que tendría que atravesar todo el estado de Arizona. Así que desde Four Corners manejé en dirección sur por Nuevo México hasta llegar a la ciudad de Gallup donde tomé la vía más rápida: la interestatal 40. Por ella pude sostener la xB a altas velocidades por mucho tiempo.
La única parada en toda la I-40 (bueno, la única de interés, porque hubo varias para ir al baño) fue para visitar el llamado Meteor Crater, un gigantesco cráter de 700 pies de profundidad en el que cayó un meteoro hace 50 mil años. De allí lo seguí directo hacia Las Vegas. O sea, cinco estados en un mismo día.
Llegué de noche, hambriento y extenuado de tanto manejar. Hubiera ido directo al hotel y dormir hasta el próximo día. En vez, fui de regreso al punto oficial de partida y mientras retrataba la Scion xB por última vez, me preguntaba cuándo será mi próximo road trip.
